Introduction
Pitzhanger Manor
Walpole Park, Ealing
Pitzhanger Manor was purchased by Soane in 1800 to be his Country Villa. Soane demolished most of the existing building, rebuilding in his style. The house was intended as a weekend retreat, a place to entertain friends and clients, a residence for his sons and a home for his growing collections.
Soane sold the house in 1810, taking his collections with him (which now form part of the Soane Museum collections). After various incarnations as a private home and a public library, the principal Soane rooms were restored in the mid-1980s and the house has been open as a museum since 1987.
