Soane Study Group

The Soane Museum Study Group is a forum for discussion on all aspects of architectural history with a particular focus on work in progress. Meetings are held on weekday evenings in the Museum.

To join the Soane Study Group email list, please contact Beth Walker (020 7440 4254 or bwalker@soane.org.uk).

The next Study Group talk is:

Wednesday 14 July 2010, 6pm for 6:30pm

by

Bernd Schmutz

 ‘Architecture is made from architectures’

Aldo Rossi describes the production of spaces as a deep engagement with architectural history to create new meaning. The talk will focus on the building for Nottingham Contemporary and the design of three new interiors for Sir John Soane’s Museum by Caruso St John Architects which exemplify a way of working that is stimulated by the use of references from our architectural environment. By extending and transforming the language of architectural forms, new spaces are embedded in a specific context to form part of a city.

Bernd Schmutz was born in Munich and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as a DAAD scholar.  Since 2004, he has been working at Caruso St John Architects and was project architect for Nottingham Contemporary which received a RIBA award in 2010. He has been teaching as a diploma tutor at Kingston University since 2008, and has been invited as a critic and lecturer to several universities in the UK.

The talk and tour will take place in the Soane Museum, Number 13, Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
Places must be booked in advance by contacting Beth Walker, 020 7440 4254, bwalker@soane.org.uk

We ask for a contribution of £5.00 on the evening, to cover the cost of wine and postage.
